Yankees Could Poach $50 Million Silver Slugger From Mets in Blockbuster Trade

The New York Yankees made some key changes to their infield this offseason. They let Gleyber Torres walk and moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. The team also signed Paul Goldschmidt to play first base. However, their platoon of DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base might be a problem.
LeMahieu is dealing with an injury, and Cabrera is better suited as a utility or bench player. Chisholm’s versatility would allow the Yankees to explore both the second and third base markets near the trade deadline. Sports Illustrated’s Dylan Sanders named Jeff McNeil as a potential target for the Yankees.
“McNeil just recently made his season debut, but still has some trade value as a consistently solid player on the middle of the infield,” wrote Sanders. “He has a .257/.332/.380 slash line over the last three years and is a more-than-solid defensive presence.”

Adding McNeil would slide Chisholm over to third base. McNeil is a two-time All-Star and former Silver Slugger. In 2022, he also won the National League batting title.
He signed a four-year, $50 million deal in 2023 and is under club control through 2027. He was dealing with an oblique injury and recently made his season debut. In three games this year, he is 4-for-12 with three RBIs and a home run.
He has made 26 starts at third base in his career, but he has primarily played second base in his career. Adding McNeil would give the Yankees a much-needed upgrade in the infield by moving Chisholm into the hot corner.
