Yankees Desperate Trade Idea Would Land $68 Million Gerrit Cole Replacement
The New York Yankees are suddenly looking for help in their starting rotation. ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed that Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, ending his season.
With limited starters available in free agency, the Yankees could find a starter through trade. Even if the Yankees do not want to give up a massive package for a player like Dylan Cease, they could still find a valuable starter. Heavy’s Michael DeFrancisco suggested the Yankees could part ways with Will Warren to acquire Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs.

Taillon had a 3.27 ERA last season in 28 starts. He is part of a crowded Cubs rotation and is a candidate to be dealt.
“In terms of compensation, the Cubs would first look at the Yankee’s farm system,” wrote DeFrancisco. “According to MLB.com, the Yankees sport the 24th-ranked farm in all of baseball. Not great, but they still have a few players that would catch the Cub’s attention. One may be pitcher Will Warren who made his major league debut last year. His stats in Triple-A last season were suspect posting a 5.91 ERA in 109.2 innings, but the stats may not tell the full story on Warren. He is a talented pitcher who could one day be a great starter with the right development.”
Taillon has a 3.29 ERA in 201 career games. He spent two seasons with the Yankees, 2021 and 2022. He is coming off one of the best years of his career and could give the Yankees rotation a much-needed boost. Warren is the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect, but Taillon may be better suited to help the Yankees now.
With Luis Gil also injured, the weight of the rotation falls on Max Fried. Adding Taillon would give the Yankees another experienced starter to help keep the rotation afloat until Gil is ready to return. Taillon signed a four-year, $68 million deal in 2023. The Cubs could be willing to take advantage of the Yankees’ desperation and trade Taillon while his value is high.
