The New York Yankees started the season strong. They were 3-1 and were tied atop the American League East with the Toronto Blue Jays, who knocked them out in the AL Division Series last October, through four games.
The Yankees were without former Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole for the entire 2025 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery. The right-hander is currently still recovering, but the Yankees also began the season without left-hander Carlos Rodón, who is recovering from elbow surgery of his own.
On Tuesday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network provided updates on the recovery timelines of both pitchers.
“It looks like, at least in respect of Carlos Rodón, we could see him sometime before the end of May and maybe even the middle of May depending on how things trend,” Morosi said on “MLB Central.” “Gerrit Cole, a little more likely later on, maybe May or June timetable for him. But the good news for the Yankees in both respects, live batting practices being thrown by both this week.”
This is good news for the Yankees, who are going to be relying heavily on Max Fried until Cole and Rodón return. Once both starters are back, the Yankees’ rotation should look much stronger as they try to return to the playoffs this year.
That could give them an edge over Toronto in the AL East race. But for now, the two pitchers are making good progress and are moving closer to making their eventual returns. It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks play out and where they will be in terms of their recovery.
