Yankees Named Possible Trade Destination for $58 Million Rival Infield Duo
The New York Yankees are busy chasing outfielder Juan Soto in hopes of re-signing him for the next decade-plus. However, general manager Brian Cashman must address other holes on the Bombers’ 2025 roster. Could he do that by swinging a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for Yandy Díaz and Brandon Lowe?
As it currently stands, New York’s right side of the infield is empty. Second baseman Gleyber Torres is a free agent and the club declined Anthony Rizzo’s 2025 team option. If they’re able to reel in Soto for a deal worth north of $600 million, it’ll be important to find cost-effective ways to fill out the remainder of their roster.
Díaz was named an All-Star and won his first Silver Slugger Award in 2023. His performance took a step back in 2024, but it was still productive. He slashed .281/.341/.414 with 14 home runs, 31 doubles, 65 RBI and 55 runs scored in 621 plate appearances. Lowe’s 2024 performance essentially mirrored what he did the year prior. He hit .244/.311/.473 with 21 homers, 58 RBI and 56 runs scored in 426 plate appearances.
If the Rays look to shed salary this winter, would they be open to making a deal with the Yankees? Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller says no, but he also thinks Cashman will try anyway.
“The (New York) Mets, (Los Angeles) Dodgers and (San Francisco) Giants would all be more than a little interested. And while the Rays would presumably prefer not to make a trade within the division, the Gleyber Torres-less Yankees would at least make Tampa Bay say no,” he said. “In fact, the Yankees would probably offer to take both guys off the Rays’ hands, considering their current 1B/2B plan appears to be Ben Rice and Oswaldo Cabrera.”
Díaz is set to make $10 million in 2025, the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $24 million deal. Lowe’s six-year, $24 million deal just turned into a $34.5 million pact since his $10.5 million club option was recently exercised by Tampa Bay.
