Yankees Predicted to Acquire $108M Ace in Shocking Trade to Replace Gerrit Cole
The New York Yankees will be without Gerrit Cole this season. He underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Additionally, Luis Gil is slated to miss the start of the season with a lat strain.
The Yankees signed Max Fried this offseason but traded Nestor Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers. The team needs help in the rotation and TWSN predicted the Yankees would trade for Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners.
“The past two seasons with the Seattle Mariners have been strong seasons by Castillo and could help hold down the Yankees rotation until Cole returns,” wrote TWSN. “Castillo’s biggest contribution would be the innings he would help eat away.”

Castillo signed a five-year, $108 million deal in 2023. He also has a vesting option for 2028 that kicks in with 180 innings pitched in 2027. Castillo has a 3.34 ERA in the last three seasons. He has made 88 starts in that span, racking up 561 strikeouts.
He is a three-time All-Star and finished fifth in American League Cy Young Award voting in 2023. The Mariners have no shortage of pitching and could be willing to trade Castillo for players with offensive upside. The Yankees could dip into their farm system and pry Castillo away from the Mariners.
He would be able to slot in next to Fried in the rotation while Gil recovers from his injury. When healthy, the Yankees would be able to deploy Fried, Gil and Castillo at the top of their rotation.
