Yankees Predicted To Pursue Blockbuster Trade For $70 Million Devin Williams

The New York Yankees have turned the page on their 2024 closer Clay Holmes. Holmes has agreed to terms on a three-year, $38 million deal with the New York Mets, officially ending the star closer’s time in the Bronx.
Now the Yankees can turn their attention to adding a different pitcher to fill the closer role for Aaron Boone. There are plenty of available options for the Yankees to pursue, but one might stand above the rest.
FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently suggested the Yankees should pursue a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for closer Devin Williams. Spotrac projects Williams to sign a five-year, $70 million deal when he hits free agency at the end of the 2025 season.

“Williams is on the final season of his contract with the Brewers and is expected to make $8.4 million in 2025 according to Spotrac,” Mountz wrote. “He is one of the MLB’s super-talents and as such, it may be a winning idea for the Yankees to trade for him. Even better, if they can extend him, this will probably work to their advantage for years to come.”
Williams is one of the best closers in baseball and the Yankees would have the money to re-sign him in 2025.
The issue here is that Milwaukee isn’t going to be likely to move him. They almost definitely won’t trade him this offseason. If the Brewers decide to trade him, it’ll likely come at the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
If Williams ends up on the trade block at the deadline, this could be a reasonable move then, but right now, it doesn’t seem very likely at all.
