The New York Yankees have not made any major moves in free agency yet, but that could change in the next wave of signings. However, their involvement in the trade market could dictate who they target.
Brian Cashman recently noted that the Yankees will be “open-minded” when it comes to trading a player like Jazz Chisholm Jr. His comments came after a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, noting the Yankees had listened to teams interested in Chisholm. He is one year away from free agency, and the Yankees could get a decent return for him.
Perhaps the Yankees could use Chisholm in a package to acquire a star. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey urged the Yankees to include Chisholm in a trade to land All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton. During the All-Star break, Buxton said he would not waive his no-trade clause and wanted to stay with the Minnesota Twins for life. However, the Twins sold off their other stars at the trade deadline. The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reported that Buxton “may reconsider his stance for certain clubs if the Twins continue breaking up their roster.”
Buxton signed a seven-year, $100 million deal in 2021. When healthy, he is one of the best outfielders in baseball. Adding a player like Buxton would give the Yankees another superstar in the outfield. Haringey went on to say that adding Buxton would eliminate the need to sign Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.
With money to spend, in that case, Haringey suggested the Yankees sign Bo Bichette to replace Chisholm at second base. Bichette is reportedly open to moving to second base, and teams may prefer that given his poor defense at shortstop. He is a two-time All-Star and has led the American League in hits twice. He would be a great addition to the Yankees, and his ability to hit the ball in the air to the opposite field consistently could be great for Yankee Stadium.
