Young Woman Reported Missing on Trip With Boyfriend Found Alive
Authorities confirmed that 22-year-old Kaylei Bernstein of Naples, Florida, who was reported missing after going on a trip with her boyfriend in December, has been found alive.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said Bernstein was “alive and well” in an update on Facebook.
Newsweek reached out to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
The Context
Officials said Bernstein’s family became concerned after losing contact with her. Bernstein previously kept in touch with family via text messages, phone calls and social media.
Bernstein’s mother spoke to her daughter on the phone on July 7, then reported her missing on Monday, according to a report from the sheriff’s office obtained by Cape Coral news station WFTX.

What To Know
Bernstein was expected to go on a trip with her boyfriend for three weeks, but she continued traveling after that point. The two had been traveling through the Midwest.
Bernstein’s mother said her daughter sounded “visibly upset” during the July 7 phone call, according to the report obtained by WFTX. She allegedly stated that she was in Arizona, then said she was in Illinois.
Bernstein also stopped posting on social media, which her family said was unusual, WFTX reported. Her mother said a private investigator revealed that her daughter’s boyfriend, William Canterbury, had previously been arrested for domestic violence.
Lee County Court records show that Canterbury was arrested for battery touch or strike (domestic violence), a first-degree misdemeanor, in 2018. He was not formally charged by state prosecutors, according to WFTX.
Officials did not disclose where Bernstein was located or provide further details about the circumstances of her disappearance.
National Missing Person Statistics
In 2024, the FBI’s National Crime Information Center reported over 533,000 missing person cases across the United States. This includes nearly 184,000 cases of missing adults.
The FBI said that in cases where the circumstances of a disappearance were disclosed, 95 percent were classified as runaways. The Missing Person Circumstances field, which is optional, was utilized in 258,849, or 48 percent, of cases last year.
What People Are Saying
SWFL Crime Stoppers posted on Facebook: “Thank you to everyone who shared this post. We are happy to share that Kaylei has been located safe!”
