The Alex Bregman sweepstakes could potentially run into spring training at this rate. The Houston Astros remain one of the top teams linked to their former third baseman, but four teams closely follow.
The Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers are all closely linked to the franchise third baseman as well. It doesn’t appear as though any team will offer a deal close to the reported $200 million that Bregman was searching for.
Many view the Astros as the favorites to land the star but the sweepstakes might not be as cut and dry as it seems.
Chandler Rome of The Athletic recently reported on the Astros’ annual media luncheon. Rome reported on a few comments made by Astros general manager Dana Brown.

“During his address at the team’s annual media luncheon, Dana Brown twice spoke about Alex Bregman in the past tense, saying once that the team ‘lost Bregman,’ ” Rome wrote in a post to Twitter/X on Tuesday.
Whether these comments were made consciously or not doesn’t really matter. The Astros’ general manager is the closest person to the negotiations. If anybody is going to know if the Astros have lost Bregman or not, it’s Brown.
This paints a bleak picture for the Astros, but they’ve prepared for the post-Bregman life by acquiring both Christian Walker and Isaac Parades. Houston may not want to see its franchise star sign with another team, but it’s certainly prepared for it if he opts to.
