Chris Pratt Returns to Fan-Favorite Animated Role
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Chris Pratt will once more play a cat who is known for some very strong feelings about lasagna. As reported by Deadline, Alcon Entertainment is moving forward with a sequel to “The Garfield Movie” and Pratt is confirmed to return as the titular feline.

There is no word yet on who will write or direct the sequel. The first film was directed by Mark Dindal and written by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds.
“The Garfield Movie” hit theaters last May alongside “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” Judging by its 37% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, reviewers weren’t fans of the flick, but its 79% audience score shows average viewers liked it a bit more. The film made close to $260 million against its $60 million production budget.

“The Garfield Movie” wasn’t the first 21st century attempt to adapt the newspaper strip kitty. In 2004, “Garfield: The Movie” was released with Bill Murray voicing the eponymous cat. It made $208 million and got even more thoroughly trounced by critics judging by its abysmal 14% Rotten Tomatoes score.
So far, Pratt is the only voice actor confirmed to be returning. At the very least it would be expected that the filmmakers would try to get back Nicholas Hoult to play Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle, and Harvey Guillen as the dog Odie.
Other popular actors from the first film include Samuel L. Jackson as Garfield’s father Vic, Ving Rhames as the highland bull Otto, and Snoop Dogg as the Maine Coon named Maurice.
Pratt recently starred in Netflix’s “The Electric State.” The star has a growing list of upcoming releases including next year’s sci-fi thriller “Mercy,” the second season of Amazon Prime’s “The Terminal List,” and the McG-directed drama “Way of the Warrior Kid.”
One area in which Pratt’s future is somewhat mysterious is that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor has confirmed he will return to play Peter Quill for Marvel, but so far we don’t know when. His name was conspicuously missing from the cast announcement for next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”
“The Garfield Movie 2” isn’t the only animated sequel Pratt is expected to show up in. Last March, only a couple of months before the release of “The Garfield Movie,” a sequel to the smash hit “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was announced with a release date of April 3, 2026.
