ECW Legend Hated Time in WWE, “It Was Soul Sucking”

ECW is one of the most beloved promotions in professional wrestling history, bringing hardcore wrestling to the mainstream and introducing countless iconic wrestlers, including Rob Van Dam, Taz, Sabu, and many more.

Unfortunately, this was not the case with the WWE version of ECW. While it served as a great platform for some superstars, including Bobby Lashley and CM Punk, it felt like a pale imitation of the original product.

This sentiment was felt by multiple ECW originals who joined the brand, including former ECW Champion and professional wrestling legend The Sandman.

In a recent appearance on “1 of a Kind With RVD,” The Sandman revealed that he absolutely hated his time with WWE, calling the entire experience “soulsucking.”

“I hated it there,” Sandman said, per Fightful. “I had no friends. It was soul sucking. I hated to get on a plane. I hated to go there. I hated to be in the locker room. I couldn’t wait to get out of the f—— building. I hated it so much.”

“You know how everyone goes on TV and they want as much time as they can, they had to tell me to stop going home early. I was going in there and giving them five minutes. Kevin Dunn sends it down to [referee Mike] Chioda, ‘Do not go home early.’ I went home early every single match. Never took any time I was allotted.”

Looking at his time in WWE, it’s easy to see why Sandman didn’t have an urge to stick around.

After main eventing ECW: One Night Stand alongside Tommy Dreamer and The Dudley Boyz in 2005, Sandman was left to more middling matches and made brief appearances on ECW before being drafted to Raw.

While he still had memorable moments, it was nothing compared to his time with ECW proper in the 90s.

There, Sandman was beloved for his hardcore character that would enter through the crowd, chugging beer and holding a kendo stick, which he would use to great effect.

In the end, Sandman would be a five-time ECW Champion and a beloved hardcore icon.
