How Jelly Roll Made A TV Legend’s Day
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Country star Jelly Roll recently sent a video in response to a letter he got from one Happy Days actor, leaving quite the significant impact on him.
Happy Days alum Henry Winkler – who plays “The Fonz” in the show, appeared in a video posted on the Live With Kelly and Mark Instagram page on Tuesday, October 15, in which he explained the incident to the audience. “I write thank you notes or fan notes, and I wrote one to Jelly Roll. ‘Dear Mr. Roll.’ And I never thought I would hear back and all of a sudden I got a video from Kelly of Mr. Roll thanking me,” Winkler, 78, explained.
In the video response from “Mr. Roll” – whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord – the 39-year-old said, “Hey Mr Winkler, it’s Jelly Roll, I’m just sending my love. I have been hoping to see you ’cause I got a note and they said it was from you.”
The songwriter then admitted, “I didn’t believe it and this is my publicist. She hates being embarrassed but now she is, and she told me it was you, she confirmed and I cannot tell you how much that meant to me,” in the same clip.
The country rapper expressed how much the letter meant to him later in the video and that he has since framed it and put it up next to “all the stuff that’s really been special in [his] career.”
The Nashville native closed out the video by saying, “Thank you, I’m absolutely honored Mr. Winkler, I can’t wait to see you and hopefully give you a hug man, I’m a big hugger, I’ll squeeze you.”
The three-time Emmy Award winner previously admitted to Jimmy Kimmel that he was first introduced to the “Son of a Sinner” singer when he saw him on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In a video of the interview posted on October 10, Winkler revealed to the host that the appearance is what prompted him to write the letter in the first place.
