South Korea Fighter Jets Accidentally Bomb Civilians in Joint U.S. Exercise
South Korean military jets misdropped bombs on a village and caused multiple civilian injuries, authorities in the country said.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported that two Air Force KF-16 fighter jets mistakenly dropped eight air-to-surface bombs.
The Gyeonggi-do Bukbu Fire Services said 15 people were wounded, Reuters reported. Two of them were seriously injured though Yonhap reported that their injuries were not life-threatening.
The accident occurred in Pocheon, about 25km south of the North Korean border, during joint South Korea-U.S. exercise, the fire services said.
“We deeply regret the unintended release of the bombs, which resulted in civilian casualties, and wish those injured a swift recovery,” the South Korean air force said in a statement, AFP reported.
“We will actively take all necessary measures, including compensation for the damage.”
The fire service said two soldiers and two foreigners were among the injured, and there was damage to a church and seven other buildings, per Yonhap.
An investigation into the incident will be launched, the air force said.
This is a developing story and more information will be added shortly.
