Trump Gives Update on ‘Amazing’ Progress of Shot National Guardsman

President Donald Trump has given a health update on the status of the surviving National Guard member who was shot in Washington, D.C., on November 26.

The fatal attack took place only blocks away from the White House.

Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed, and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, was critically wounded. Both had been deployed to D.C. as part of an ongoing federal mission that the Trump administration says is intended to address urban crime.

“Today I got a call that he got up from bed, can you believe that? He got up,” Trump told the crowd at a rally in Pennsylvania. “Now, he didn’t speak, he’s not ready for that yet, I mean, he got hit in the head, but he got up and, boy, they’re so happy. It’s amazing,” he said.

The suspect in the shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan who entered the U.S. under a post-Taliban evacuation program, was apprehended after getting shot at the scene.

He faces a federal first-degree murder charge along with multiple other counts, including assault with intent to kill and firearms-related counts.
