Woman ‘Humiliated’ Sister’s Fiancé at Family Dinner—Internet Agrees
A woman has been cheered by viewers on Reddit for calling out her sister’s fiancé for a cruel “prank” that he played on his partner.
The woman recalled the exchange on the platform on March 18 u/miadawnx. The post has since amassed over 15,000 upvotes and thousands of comments, with many siding with her for publicly embarrassing the man during a family dinner.
The incident unfolded after the man staged an elaborate fake proposal in front of his friends, only to retract it as a joke. The emotional fallout left the woman’s sister devastated, yet she chose to remain in the relationship despite the humiliation.
When the man made another offhand remark about their wedding timeline at a family gathering, the sister seized the moment to expose his past behavior, leading to a tense confrontation that left the dinner table in silence.
Dr. Jay Serle, a clinical psychologist, told Newsweek that the woman should have discussed what to do before making a scene at the event, but that it looked like her heart was in the right place.
“It sounds like the woman cares about her sister and doesn’t want to see her get hurt, but this is something that she should have discussed with her in private first,” Serle told Newsweek.
The woman had detailed the backstory in her post, explaining that her sister had been in a relationship with the man for three years. While her sister was quiet and reserved, he was outgoing and sometimes over-the-top.
“A few weeks ago, my sister came to me in tears because her fiancé had ‘pranked’ her in front of his friends by pretending to propose in an elaborate setup, only to laugh in her face and say, ‘Just kidding, babe! You really thought I was serious?'” she said. “His friends all laughed while she stood there, humiliated.”
Despite the embarrassment, her sister chose not to end the relationship, though she was heartbroken. The fiancé later gave a weak justification, claiming he had a real proposal planned soon and that it was merely a joke gone wrong.
The situation escalated when the family gathered for dinner at their parents’ house. When someone asked about the wedding, the fiancé smirked and said, “Guess she’ll just have to wait and see, huh?” That was the last straw for the woman.
“I smiled sweetly and said, ‘Oh, is this like how she had to wait for that hilarious fake proposal in front of all your friends? That was so funny, right? Let’s all have a good laugh about it now,'” she added.
The response was immediate.
“The table went dead silent. My sister looked mortified, but my parents looked pissed at him,” she continued in the post.
When the fiancé tried to brush it off, her father firmly shut him down.
“That’s not a joke. That’s cruelty,” her father said, making it clear where the family stood.
The fiancé left soon after, and now the woman’s sister is angry at her for “embarrassing him and making things worse.” However, the woman believes he deserved the public callout, and their parents are backing her stance.
Viewers on Reddit have overwhelmingly sided with the woman, condemning the fiancé’s behavior as emotionally manipulative and cruel.
“You did the right thing,” one viewer said. “He was cruel, and your sister needed someone to stand up for her.”
“It’s tough to see someone you care about being mistreated but you did the right thing,” another added.
Others urged the woman’s sister to rethink the engagement before it gets too late.
One viewer commented: “She should not marry this a****** even if he asks. He is cruel and a very small man to do that to her. Your sister needs to know she can do so much better.”
